Nona Yoanishara (born in Yogyakarta, 1992) is a researcher, a designer and an artist with a background in graphic design. She studied philosophy at Gadjah Mada University in 2012 and has participated in exhibitions and media art projects both at home and abroad since 2019. Sarah is interested in the relationship between art, science and technology, especially neuroscience. She is also interested in developing the relationship between human consciousness and memory in the future by developing Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI), such as electrode-based Brain Wave EEG to estimate the brain's signal system.
Sarah's works have been presented in several exhibitions, including Crossing Ecotones: A Thousand of Threads, Museum of Fiber Arts, Taichung (2024), Pascamasa, National Gallery of Indonesia, Jakarta (2023), and The Fable of Net In Earth, Arko Art Center, Seoul, (2022). She also served as curator for the exhibitions Collective Collegia, Seoul, South Korea (2022) and Weaves of Hope, Kiniko Art Space, Yogyakarta (2022).
Since the Electroencephalograph (EEG) machine was built in 1958 at Burden Neurological Institute in Bristol - a technology that can be used to monitor brain activity by measuring electrical activity in the brain has emerged. This technology is a revolution in dissecting how human behavior, which has long been controlled by the brain, can be interpreted comprehensively in scientific and objective data. This work tries to read the relationship between the human mind and its surrounding environment and uses EEG technology as a preventive and imaginative step to understand the representation of human brain performance and memory.
This works adapts EEG technology features as a protocol to read memory and human brain performance. Like when we look at a social phenomenon such as violence, crime, radicalism and even war or even other visionary sides. How the mind of a futurist, who is able to create revolutionary discoveries that can change the world, works. This work connects two axes in the presentation of a work -Sarah wants to present a deep experience to the audience, playing with the boundaries between reality and the virtual world. Seeing the imaginary space which is often perceived as a mystery, delving into abstract and dynamic human thinking.
