MOTIF: RAMALAN

The seers of the future do not just predict in the tunnel of time, but also deal with the changing perception of time. Time is no longer the history of the future that must be predicted, because all events that give meaning are now under timeless progress, do not have a final destination. The perception of time is of course greatly influenced by the very rapid changes in various areas of life today.

The theme for ARTJOG 2024 is Motif: Ramalan. Ramalan (prophecy) is an imaginary motif that connects the past, the present and tomorrow, or between tomorrow and the present and the past. As an imaginary motive, the meaning of an event is not completely determined by antecedents or something that precedes it, like a hypothesis that predicts various implications in scientific disciplines. In the imagination of artists, prophecy is also the predictive power that drives their creativity in the creative process.

Prophecy cannot be separated from the culture that is full of literary beauty that still lives around us –jangka (the term), serat (literature), ilmu "titen"(observation), poetry, ballads, piwulang (teaching) and so on. In literary speech or religious customs, various indications regarding future events which are considered predetermined (pinesti) appear, even predestined (tinitah). A fortune teller or seer thinks he/she knows before the event itself occurs–weruh sakdurunge winarah. This kind of cultural treasure also provides a reference for the motif of this exhibition.

An artist who likes to record big and small events in the past, who stretches his/her cosmic view as wide as the history of the earth, who is interested in legends, myths and developing them, who feels like he/she lives under the dome of dystopia or utopia, who is sensitive to all kinds of changing situations or who imagines a different future historical route above the suffering of colonialism in the past is on the verge between the surprises of progress they face today and the various possibilities that will arrive tomorrow. The motif of prophecy in this exhibition re-imagines various images of events and hopes for tomorrow rather than confirming predictions. // ARTJOG 2024 CURATORIAL TEAM.
