Candrani Yulis

Candrani Yulis was born in 1995 in Probolinggo She studied graphic design at the Department of Visual Communication Design, Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta. She submitted her works in the Open Call-ARTJOG program.

Her installation work depicts her position as a woman who grew up in a strictly religious setting. She referred to fiqh/jurisprudence, knowledge in Islamic law that unlike the Koran can change over time. Fiqh can continue to develop in accordance with the times and the existing socio-political dynamic. The legal order that Candrani specifically refers to is fiqh which promotes underage marriage and regulates female sexuality in marriage. For Candrani, the fiqh that promotes underage marriage hinders equality and emancipation of women due to patriarchal practices in Islam. The light in this installation implies the atmosphere of home or the light of faith, but its dimness marks the time for sleeping or sexual intercourse. The figures of hands point to the sexual act as referred to in the Islamic guidelines on marriage. The child-sized bed is directly associated with the marriage of the underage women.
