Malya Sasmaya

Malya Sasmaya was born in 2009 in Surabaya.

This works is the most emotionally draining art project I've ever worked on. Imagine how unpleasant it would be to collect photos of yourself in "unsightly" versions, even then showing them to the public, it's like bullying yourself.

Basically I don't like taking selfies, because the result is often unsatisfactory. Even these photos might all be "failed photo" especially by the standard profile photo for social media needs. Especially now that the use of filter for photo and video uploaded on social media has gone far beyond the limits of reasonableness, maybe you have deceived yourself and others.

Through this artwork project I learned several things:

FIRST, bullying is always unpleasant, even if the perpetrator is oneself. Then we should stop doing to others everything that we ourselves are not even happy to be treated as such.

SECOND, sometimes "failure" and "success" are only about perception, we can even put failure as success just by changing our point of view.

THIRD, the truth still needs to be conveyed even if it is bitter, including the fact that self-portraits may be unpleasant, and the use of filters for selfie needs on social media needs to be rethought about its benefits.

FOURTH, no matter what condition that we are experiencing, we always have a reason to love ourselves and be grateful for everything.
