The Krisna Murti Project explores the persona of Krisna Murti (1957–2023) through the medium of video. This project investigates the relationship of his works with social, political, and artistic developments in Indonesia, as well as activism and historical contexts. It also features fragments of his thoughts through his essays on the evolution of media art in Indonesia. The Krisna Murti project for ARTJOG is a further development of a previous research project titled Temporal Flux: Tribute to Krisna Murti (2024). The digital archives used in this project draw from the collection of the Indonesian Visual Art Archive (IVAA) in Yogyakarta.
Three television monitors display three videos that explore the genealogy of web/internet development and the evolution of its users. The first period, before the 1998 Reformasi, marks the transition from analog to digital technology and the early development of Web 1.0, where users were passive. The second period, post-Reformasi 1998, highlights the rise of digital media technology with Web 2.0, including social media, blogs, and YouTube. The third period signifies the transition from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0, where devices are interconnected.
The video in channel one presents the relationship between Krisna Murti’s biography and the socio-political context as well as the stages of his artistic practice. Channel two showcases the diversity of his artistic genres, which extend beyond technology-based art to include drawing, painting, poetry, found objects, and more. Channel three presents Krisna Murti’s writings on the development of media art in Indonesia within a global context. Beyond his role as an artist, art historian, video art curator, and educator, Krisna Murti was, in essence, an “infrastructure” of new media art in Indonesia.
